Rogue Q&A

6 January 2024

We’ve received a ton of awesome questions, requests, and feedback over the last few months, so we wanted to take some time this weekend to answer those publicly. Thank you to those who’ve taken the time to fill out our survey, send us an email, or drop us a message – your questions show us where we need to be more clear and your ideas give us goals to strive towards. If you have a question or suggestion not addressed here, please drop a comment below or email us at roguehuntofficial@gmail.com.

Q: During the hunt, I’m afraid of missing list updates on social; are they anywhere permanent?
A: Yes! Hunt updates / edits to the list / new items are listed on the main hunt page as well as on the item list itself. If you look at the page from the 2023 August Hunt under archives on our site, you can see a section for Edited Items. This year, we have also implemented a “blog” titled Rogue Hunt Happenings where we post major announcements.
– 2023 Main Hunt Page:

Q: Why does Rogue need a nonprofit partner / the Starfish Foundation?
A: Rogue isn’t an established nonprofit or business (yet) and therefore we cannot host our own registration. To ensure your safety (as well as our own) collecting personal information, collecting registration fees, and paying out winners has to be run by another entity. Plus, you get the benefit of knowing your money is in the hands of a legitimate nonprofit and not three admins who “promise” to be trustworthy on the internet.

Q: Will the Rogue Hunt partner change from year to year?
A: Finding a new organization that is willing to partner with us to this magnitude on a yearly basis would be extremely time consuming, would mean there would be a different registration portal/process every year, and would require us to put trust in a new organization every year to understand what Rogue is and carry out their responsibilities in a way that fit what this community wants and needs.
That does not mean that Starfish has to be the only *benefactor* – We’re using that term specifically because a benefactor is not a partner. It does not insinuate that there is any responsibility required in return. During every hunt, there have been and will continue to be multiple organizations / nonprofits who can benefit from tasks (monetarily or otherwise). We also plan to change the benefactor of the Spread Goodness Like Glitter item every hunt in which it exists. Whether or not the charity selected for this item is announced prior to the start of the hunt or simply listed IN that task like it was in 2023 is something we haven’t discussed yet.

Q: Do you have a budget now for X after the 2023 Rogue Hunt?
A: Rogue made 0 profit off of the 2023 Rogue Hunt. As we’re not an LLC or nonprofit of our own standing, we do not currently have the mechanisms in place to handle large profits. 50% of registration fees went to the Starfish Foundation and 50% of registration fees went towards prizes paid out to 14 different individuals. We have, however, made a profit off the highlight book, which we have used to pay for a website upgrade which removed ads.

Q: I would like to be able to leave a comment or note when I submit an item / upload it to the Drive.
A: We’d love to see your comments! To do so in a Google Drive, click the three dots on your uploaded image or video then select information, then details. At the bottom of the popup, there is a text box labeled “description”. You can type your comment or note there.

Q: Are you still using Twitter?
A: Begrudgingly, yes. We’ve also opened a Bluesky and hope to fully transition there eventually. Follow us at https://bsky.app/profile/theroguehunt.bsky.social.

Q: Rogue points? Tiers? Individual rankings?
A: We hear you; individual points are fun. We also know that point totals favor individuals who have been doing Rogue the longest, so we’ve been discussing ways to honor individuals who have the highest overall points as well as individuals who achieve greatness in some other way. This is to say that, yes, we’ve been secretly tracking points for all participants on the back end. That’s right, all of your 2023 points have been tracked on a spreadsheet. In addition to points earned by completing tasks, everyone who signed up for the 2023 hunt also got 100 points for putting their faith in us. Everyone who signs up for the Game-A-Thon will receive 60 points.

Q: Can you give us point feedback on individual items?
A: Nope. Mostly because every judge scores items independently so one judge may think your item is the best thing since sliced bread while another deducted points because they think you didn’t follow the task correctly. Judging is subjective. That’s why there’s 5 of us who average scores together. For a general idea of what does and does not score (bonus) points see https://roguehunt.com/rogue-hunt-faqs/judging-guidelines/.

Q: Full Saturday on either end!?!?!??
A: Yes, yes, we heard you loud and clear, you don’t all have to say it at once! 😂 It’s there for 2024.

Q: Can you add more features to the spreadsheet? Our team would have liked X.
A: Once you copy the spreadsheet it is 100% yours and 100% editable. You can add as many columns and formulas as you’d like. We hesitate to add too many *fancy* pieces to the spreadsheet because we don’t want it to be overwhelming for those less comfortable with the format or too cluttered for those who just want to use it to read the item. Also, there’s no way every team is going to agree on what add-ons they want and how they prefer them to look. However, if a group of Rogue participants want to make and share their own suped out version of the spreadsheet, we fully encourage that endeavor.

Q: Can we add a caption file to the Google Drive for videos?
A: Yes, 100%. You’re not required to do, but are encouraged to do so. We support accessibility in every way. Here’s a how to guide.

Q: Can Rogue add captions to videos and alt text to images?
A: It is our intent to do this with every image or video we put out. If we miss it on something, please, please let us know in the comments or send us a DM or email.

Q: Will the team sizes ever change?
A: For some hunts like our Rogue-ish Game-A-Thon, it will be individual players. For our main hunt our team size will stay at 4-6 people. This team size makes it easier for captains to help their teammates and also have enough time to play themselves. If we increased team size, there would also be less overall teams which wouldn’t provide the level of competition we’re looking for. It also makes it more difficult for teams to fill on their own. If we make the teams smaller, it does not create the community-building experience we’re looking for. We believe 4-6 players allows for cozy, silly, and wildly creative teams and the opportunity to create an ever-growing friend group of weirdos around the world.
